Tryon Palace is a beloved historic site today, but before the American Revolution, it was widely disliked. The royal governor used money meant for public schools to build it, then raised taxes to replace the funds. Vandals and a fire in 1798 destroyed much of the palace, but it was rebuilt in 1959 and now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
